BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — The B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe) teen driver training program was at Bristol Motor Speedway this past weekend, offering young drivers complimentary lessons.

The program offers hands-on instruction from professional racers, stunt drivers, law enforcement officers and others.

Instructor Wylie Bean said the program teaches young drivers the importance of focusing on the road.

“Pay attention,” he emphasized. “Distraction now exceeds speeding as the leading cause of fatalities. Modern cars have become more distracting, with cell phones and devices pulling focus away, along with the presence of other passengers. Simply paying attention can significantly reduce the number of crashes.”

Doug Herbert established this nonprofit in 2008 following the tragic loss of his sons, Jon and James, in a car accident. Since then, the program has educated over 150,000 drivers. According to the nonprofit, graduates are 64% less likely to experience a car crash.
