Parents And Education

The only child of Ben Archibald Boothroyd (1886–1948) and Mary, both textile employees, Boothroyd was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, in 1929. She attended council institutions for her education before enrolling in Dewsbury College of Commerce and Art (now Kirklees College).

She danced as a member of the Tiller Girls dance ensemble from 1946 to 1952, giving a brief performance at the London Palladium during that time. However, a foot infection ended her performing career, and she decided to go into politics instead.

Career

Before being voted MP for West Bromwich in a by-election in 1973, Boothroyd ran for a number of Labour Party seats, including Leicester South East in 1957, Peterborough 1959, Nelson and Colne 1968, and Rossendale 1970.

Boothroyd served as a member of the European Parliament from 1975 to 1977 after being hired as a junior government whip in 1974. In 1979, she became a member of the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and sat on.

Member Of Parliament

Boothroyd ran for the Labour Party and sought office in a number of constituencies before being selected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for West Bromwich in a 1973 by-election, including Rossendale 1970, Nelson and Colne 1968, Leicester South East 1957.

Boothroyd was elected to the European Parliament (MEP) from 1975 to 1977 after being named an assistant government whip in 1974. In 1979, she entered the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs as well as the Speaker’s Panel of Chairmen.

She served on both committees through 1981. She also served on the House of Commons Commission from 1983 to 1987 as well as the Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) from 1981 to 1987.

Death
