In the late 1960s and early 1970s, The Delfonics were a pioneering Philadelphia soul singing group. “La-La (Means I Love You),” “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time),” “Break Your Promise,” “I’m Sorry,” and “Ready or Not Here I Come (Can’t Hide from Love)” are some of their most well-known songs. Thom Bell, the band’s composer and producer, and William Hart, the main singer and founder, wrote all of their successful songs. Their songs have been used prominently in film soundtracks, notably Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown (1997), in which “La-La (Means I Love You)” and “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind” highlight the central connection between Pam Grier and Robert Forster’s characters. Their song “Ready or Not Here I Come (Can’t Hide from Love)” was used on the fictitious radio station The Lowdown 91.1 in the video game Grand Theft Auto V. The Wu-Tang Clan, Fugees, Deltron 3030, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Boyz II Men, Missy Elliott, and DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince are just a few of the hip-hop and rap musicians that have sampled their music extensively. Many other artists, including Aretha Franklin, The Jackson 5, Patti LaBelle, New Kids on the Block, Fugees, Todd Rundgren, Prince, Swing Out Sister, and The Manhattan Transfer, have covered their tunes.
