Canadian jazz singer, TV host, and civil leader Eleanor Collins passed away on 2 March 2024 in Surry, Canada at the age of 104. She was known as the first lady of Jazz in Canada and a pioneer of Black representation in the media. She won the Distinguished Centennial Pioneer Award in 1986, the ACTRA Sam Payne Award in 2006, the Black Canadian Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014, the BC Black Historical Society Award, and the Alberta Black Cultural Research Society Award.

Eleanor Collins was born on 21 November 1919 in Edmonton, Alberta to Richard Ellis Proctor and Estella Mae Cowan Proctor who were part of a wave of Black settlers. Her parents migrated from Oklahoma to Canada in the early 20th century.

Eleanor’s parents were attracted by the Canadian government’s offer of cheap land and the premise of a better life. Despite this, they faced racism, discrimination, and harsh weather conditions in their new home.

Eleanor had three sisters with whom she grew up in a musical family because her father used to play the violin whereas her mother used to sing and play the piano. Eleanor and he sisters learned to sing and play harmonize from an early age and they used to perform at church, school, and community events.

Eleanor Collins’s father used to work as a furniture deliveryman until he got involved in an accident. Her mother took over the responsibility of providing for the family by starting a hand laundry service at home.

She and her sisters used to help her mother with the laundry, ironing, and delivering the clothes to their customers.

She described her mother as a strong and resilient woman who taught Eleanor and her sisters the value of hard work and perseverance.

Eleanor Collins was married to Richard Collins in 1992 after meeting Richard at a dance hall in Vancouver. Her husband was a saxophonist and a band leader who supported her career aspirations and encouraged her to pursue her talents.

In 1948, Eleanor Collins with her husband and their four children moved to Burnaby 1948. The couple was blessed with four children named Rick, Judith, Barry, and Tom.
