Originally born Raymond Lawrence Riley in 1971, he is better known by his stage name Boots Riley. He is an American musician and poet who has worked as a rapper, songwriter, producer, screenwriter, political organiser, community activist, lecturer, and public speaker. He is best known as the lead vocalist of the bands The Coup and Street Sweeper Social Club. Riley is well-known for his on-stage energy, charm, and “punk”-like persona, which he combines with his dancing. When it comes to his vocal abilities, he is renowned to demonstrate a broad variety of cadence, voice tone, and texture, occasionally adopting the accent of a fictitious character. 

In addition to sincere, funny, witty, and optimistic lyrics with literary overtones, Boots Riley’s work is renowned for its clever, witty, and optimistic lyrics. Some of his songs are very detailed and visually descriptive, garnering him acclaim as a storyteller for his efforts. While the majority of his pieces are about subjective experiences (love, sex, broken-down vehicles, getting drunk, etc.), they are always linked together by a radical class critique of the present system and/or circumstance in which he lives. Working-class people, in several of his songs, are calling for the overthrow of the ruling class by working-class people.
