Turner used to frequent St. Louis nightclubs. She met her future husband Ike Turner and his band ‘Kings of Rhythm’ at ‘Club Manhattan.’ In 1958, Ike saw her aptitude and gave her the opportunity to record as a background singer with him.
She and Ike began singing together, and their record ‘A Fool in Love’ peaked at number two on the ‘Hot R&B Sides’ chart in 1960. ‘It’s Gonna Work Out Fine’ later garnered them their first ‘Grammy Award’ nomination. In 1964, the duet became popular and signed with ‘Loma Records,’ a subsidiary of ‘Warner Bros. Records.’ Following that, they ventured into church music, releasing ‘The Gospel According to Ike & Tina.’ It was an instant hit, and they were nominated for a Grammy Award for ‘Best Soul Gospel Performance.’
Tina played the character of ‘The Acid Queen’ in the London-based musical ‘Tommy’ in 1974. From 1975 to 1978, she went through a difficult period as a result of her marriage to Ike, an alcoholic and cocaine addict. It had an impact on their professional relationship, and Turner ceased performing with him.
