Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. (July 27, 1985 – November 17, 2021), better known by his stage name Young Dolph, was an American rapper. In 2016, he released his debut studio album, King of Memphis, which peaked at number 49 on the Billboard 200 chart.

He was featured on O.T. Genasis’s hit single “Cut It”, which peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. Young Dolph’s seventh album, Rich Slave, was released in 2020 and became his highest-charting project, debuting at number four on the Billboard 200. On November 17, 2021, he was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee.

Rapper Young Dolph is shot and killed in Memphis

Rapper Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., better known by his stage name Young Dolph, was shot and killed in Memphis on Wednesday, according to police.

Memphis Police Department Chief CJ Davis said officers responded to a shooting at a cookie shop at around 12:30 p.m. where the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The preliminary information indicates that the victim is Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. However this information will be confirmed once the identification process has been completed,” Davis said in a statement.

Davis added, “This shooting is another example of the senseless gun violence we are experiencing locally and nationwide. Our hearts go out to the Thornton family and all who are affected this horrific act of violence.”

Officials said no information about a suspect is available.

The 36-year-old rapper, who is from Memphis, released a successful, independently produced debut album, King of Memphis, in 2016.

Then he made three other albums that reached the top 10 in the Billboard 200, including his latest work, Rich Slave, which was released in 2020. The album became his highest-charting project, peaking at number four on the Billboard 200.

Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. was born on July 27, 1985, in Chicago. His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was 2 years old. He had two sisters and two brothers and was cousins with rapper Juice Wrld. 

Mostly raised by his grandmother, Dolph’s parents experienced addictions to crack cocaine and he would only see them every few weeks as a child.

Dolph said that in the community he was from in South Memphis, many of his peers were raised by their grandmothers due to the issues experienced by their parents. He described initially recognizing his grandmother as “the meanest motherfucker in the world”, explaining “I didn’t get that shit at the time. … All the shit she was telling you, you get to seeing that shit when you hit about 15”, saying that when he approached that age he began utilizing her teachings throughout his life to be more independent. 

His grandmother often did not allow Dolph to have friends visit their home but on occasion let homeless friends stay with the family. As a teenager, Dolph attended Hamilton High School.

Young Dolph Career

Born Adolph Thornton, Jr. in Chicago, Dolph debuted in 2008 with the mixtape Paper Route Campaign. Subsequent releases like The Weed Album and South Memphis Kingpin brought him to 2012, when he dropped the first in a successful series of mixtapes dubbed High Class Street Music.

By the time High Class Street Music 4 and the “Preach” single dropped in 2014, Dolph was working with major-label producers including Drumma Boy and Zaytoven. Both provided tracks for his 2016 debut LP, King of Memphis, which featured no guest artists, and debuted at number 49 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

In early 2018, Dolph issued the EP Niggas Get Shot Everyday, following up later that year with the Key Glock collaboration “Major” and the solo track “By Mistake.” The full-length Role Model appeared later in the year and became Dolph’s highest-charting album to date, hitting number 15 on the Billboard 200.

One year later, Dolph joined frequent collaborator Key Glock for 2019’s Dum and Dummer, the pair’s first collaborative mixtape. Dolph’s seventh studio album, Rich Slave, arrived in August 2020 and found him addressing issues of racism and inequality in America.

Included on the album were guest appearances by Megan Thee Stallion, Key Glock, and G Herbo. In 2021, Dolph and Glock reunited for Dum and Dummer 2, followed promptly by PAPER ROUTE iLLUMINATi, a showcase album for Dolph’s Paper Route Empire label.

Young Dolph had two children, Tre Tre and Ari, with his partner Mia Jaye and said that he was somewhat strict with his parenting due to his upbringing with his grandmother. 

He often collaborated with his cousin and fellow rapper Key Glock and was a distant relative of rapper and singer Juice Wrld, learning of the familial relationship with the latter only shortly after his death.
