Murphy vanished on the evening of Aug. 3, 2013, after being seen on surveillance film at a Liberty gas station in Lovingston. According to Charlottesville’s C-Ville Weekly, the adolescent informed her family that she was going to Lynchburg to buy hair extensions.
According to FBI officials, her white 2003 Nissan Maxima GLE SE was discovered abandoned three days later in Charlottesville. Her murder was one of the most shocking and terrifying cases in history.
As local, state, and federal authorities investigated Murphy’s kidnapping, they recognized Taylor as a guy seen on security tape at the gas station holding the door open for the adolescent as she entered. Taylor and Murphy were seen talking to each other, according to a cashier who testified at his May 2014 trial.
Taylor’s distinctive Daffy Duck neck tattoo had been described by the store clerk to the police. When authorities disseminated photographs of the man spotted talking to Murphy, a local porn store owner recognized him as Taylor, according to Investigation Discovery.

On February 5, 2021, the remains were taken to the Central District Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Richmond, where they were positively identified as Alexis Murphy. To give Murphy’s family time to grieve and make suitable preparations, the identification of the remains was not made public until February 17, 2021.
