William Tyrrell’s foster father was interrogated about a mystery phone registered in his name which was disconnected just three days before his foster son vanished.

Documents obtained by Daily Mail Australia reveal the foster father, 55, was questioned at length by then-Tyrrell task force commander Gary Jubelin about the mystery phone which was live for nine months before being cut off.

‘It had a disconnection date of the 9/9/2014, so yeah just a couple of days before you went up,’ Mr Jubelin says to the foster father in a 2016 interview recorded at NSW Police headquarters at Parramatta.

The emergence of the mystery phone comes as Daily Mail Australia can reveal William’s foster mother, 58, was grilled over two days at the NSW Crime Commission last November, and is due in court later this month charged with giving false or misleading evidence.

The foster father is also facing two charges brought by the same Unsolved Homicide team who charged his wife last month.

At Parramatta in 2016, Mr Jubelin and Detective Senior Constable Louise Currey put more than 60 questions to the foster dad about his phones and the disconnected SIM card.

Not unusually, he had had a series of handsets for one number, which he told police that ‘each one of these phones is an upgrade of the series, like an iPhone 4 and then you go to an iPhone 5, then a 5S, then the 6, then the 6S’.

Told ‘there was also another one, that you had leading up to … (that was disconnected)  before you went to Kendall’, the foster father insisted he had only one phone.

Citing his own familiar telephone number, the man said, ‘That telephone number I’d had that for almost nine years whilst I was with that company, I never had any other phone.

‘Luckily, I hadn’t actually had to pay a phone bill for nine years which was great.’

The foster dad said he had got a new phone number ‘only just now in February’  this year.

But the detectives told him that was not the phone they were talking about, but ‘the one that was connected on 27//11/13’ and disconnected in the second week of September 2014.

To deepen the mystery, the detectives told the foster father that the phone ‘didn’t show any usage, any call charge records or anything. It didn’t have any activations on it but it was a phone that you had and it’s had a disconnection’.

The foster father said he had ‘no idea. How is that possible? No idea. Doesn’t ring any bells.’

Detective: ‘You don’t believe that it’s your phone or you had that phone?’

Foster dad: ‘No. ‘Cause I would … I’ve no need to have any other phone … ’cause it was all paid for.

‘I wonder whether than might have been (the foster mother’s) what do you call it, you know the internet cards … no idea.’

Detective: ‘So … that phone there … is the only phone’.

Foster father: “Yep, yep … that’s bizarre. It’s Telstra too … no idea.’

Daily Mail Australia has earlier revealed explosive new documents shedding light on the toddler’s troubled final days with his foster family, his violent behaviour and a ‘distressing’ accident before he vanished.

The foster father is also questioned about apparently deleted text messages on his phone for more than than six weeks preceding William’s disappearance.

‘It’s noticed that during the period of (June 19 to August 3, 2014) there are no SMS messages contained in your SMS log. Why would you delete that?,’ Jubelin asks.

‘Is it a practice for you to delete SMS messages?’

Foster father: ‘Occasional yeah’ (sic).

Asked if he recalled ‘deleting a block of messages’, the man replied ‘no’ and was told the messages were ‘specifically for the foster mother’.

The interviews with William’s foster family reveal troubling details about the three-year-old’s short life.

They include an accident where William fell off a stool and couldn’t get up, how he was made to change his own dirty nappy on the day he vanished and queries about the foster father mysteriously deleting six weeks of texts with his wife.

William’s foster mother admitted that initially William ‘had personal issues …. particularly towards me’.

‘We had to deal (with) things such as William hitting me, biting me and him being basically furious’ with another child in the foster parents’ house.

‘(William was) very unsettled, particularly the time immediately following contact with (his) birth parents. The unsettled behaviour after visits would last months.’

In his first police interview, conducted just two days after the toddler vanished, the foster father admitted a ‘distressing’ incident.

William was a ‘non-stop’ child and the foster father told a Port Macquarie detective on September 14, 2014 about a recent incident at home on Sydney’s North Shore.

The foster dad said: ‘Only in the last week or so he was, you know when you’ve got the little stools that they stand on.

‘So he was sitting next to one or on one in the kitchen in our place. And he’d somehow managed to sit awkwardly and fell back.

‘But he couldn’t get back up, which is something that has distressed me a bit.

‘If he’s fallen and he’s fallen backwards, that seemed to indicate to me that he had a problem with getting back up.

‘You’ve got the stool like that. And he was lying over it so it, it’s quite and awkward thing.

‘And I think for a boy that size and age would find that a little bit awkward… I mean if eventually I wasn’t there he probably would have got himself out of it by just rolling.

‘But they don’t think about those sorts of things. They think oh, I’m in a position I can’t get out of  – and daddy, daddy’s here and daddy, daddy.

‘So you know you help them up and he’s all fine.’

In 2021 police charged both the foster mother  and the foster father with assaulting a child, and then this year charged both with stalking a child. The child is not William.

Both foster parents have pleaded not guilty to the charges and the foster mother will apply to have the charges heard under the Mental Health Act.

William Tyrrell’s foster parents will proceed to trial on the charges after it was revealed that police have a ‘large amount of surveillance device material’ and up to ten prosecution witnesses.

Parramatta Local Court heard on Friday that the couple will face a three-day hearing into the child assault allegations in January next year.
