A potentially treacherous tee shot on the final hole clears the water and lands just about perfectly. Dustin Johnson, meanwhile, has moved to 10-under with two holes to play. Still unlikely at best but enough to keep things interesting.
You hit one of the more perfect shots in recent memory. He’s just missed a birdie on 17 which would have put him 14-under and just about been curtains but he would have bitten your hand off had you offered a two-shot lead to him heading into the final hole.
Here is the shot that in all likelihood set up a maiden major championship for Collin Morikawa at just 23. I think I’d made one par by the time I was 23. I’m 34 now and the tally is the same.
Cool as you like, Morikawa lands an eagle on the 16th and is now two shots clear. Dustin Johnson, meanwhile, has to settle for par on the 15th after bogeying 14 and stays at -9.
- -13: Collin Morikawa (16)
- -11: Paul Casey (17)
- -10: Bryson DeChambeau (17), Jason Day (F- 66), Tony Finau (17), Matthew Wolff (F- 65).
This could be the moment that decides this PGA Championship. The 23-year-old is eyeing a two-shot lead with two holes left to play. It’s set up by a 294-yard tee shot which lands about two from the pin.
With a birdie on 16.
Here’s how it shapes up at the pointy end.
- -11: Paul Casey (16), Collin Morikawa (15).
- -10 Bryson DeChambeau (17), Jason Day (F-66), Tony Finau (17), Matthew Wolff (F- 65).
- -9: Dustin Johnson (14)
With a par on the 18th after finding two bunkers and it was his second shot that let him down there. The chip-out leaves him with a fairly standard putt to save. He’ll be relying on someone losing it from here but 10-under in the clubhouse is worth 11-under in the bush. Or something.
Perhaps just a glimmer of hope though as the heretofore red-hot Collin Morikawa misses a chance to take a two-shot lead and perhaps put this to bed.
- -11: Collin Morikawa (thru 14)
- -10: Matthew Wolff (F- 65), Jason Day (17), Tony Finau (15), Paul Casey (15), Dustin Johnson (13)
- -9: Bryson DeChambeau (15), Scottie Scheffler (13).
- -8: Xander Schauffele (F- 67).
But only just. That’s tough. He heads to the final tee now.
Collin Morikawa birdies the 14th to move to -11 with a perfect chip-in. If that’s the shot that wins it it’s well and truly worth it. Incidentally, he is just 23, the same age as one Tiger Woods when he won his first Wanamaker.
But one gets the feeling it’s not done just yet.
