Melbourne’s CBD is anticipated to face significant disruptions this weekend due to four protests scheduled for today.

With far-right and far-left groups expected to gather, police have been given extra powers to prevent any possible violence.

Until 8pm on Sunday, Melbourne police are authorized to conduct weapon searches and instruct individuals to remove face coverings.

An increased police presence will be deployed in the city center as officials are concerned that the demonstrations might lead to street violence.

This heightened police presence directly responds to a violent confrontation that took place on the streets two weeks ago.

Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Nick Reece expressed his displeasure with the demonstrations, stating that both he and Melbourne residents are “fed up.”

“Melbourne is starting to look like bar scene from Star Wars, and enough is enough,” he told Weekend Today.

Those heading into the the city’s CBD are urged to reconsider their travel plans as significant traffic disruptions are set for this weekend.
