In a surprising twist of fate, former Republican Congressman George Santos has announced his intention to honor President Donald Trump by naming a future child after him. This comes after Trump commuted Santos’s sentence for fraud, a decision made only three months after Santos began serving his seven-year term in federal prison. Santos, who was expelled from Congress in late 2023, had initially faced charges related to the misuse of campaign funds for personal expenses, including Botox and designer items.

The clemency granted by Trump is seen as a significant turn of events for Santos, whose brief political career was marked by controversy, including allegations of fabricating his personal history and even participating in drag performances. Following the commutation, Santos expressed his gratitude by stating that he would name his first child ‘Donald’ in honor of the former president. He also acknowledged the efforts of his congressional allies, like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who played a pivotal role in securing his release.

In a candid interview with New York Magazine, Santos elaborated on his plans, noting that any future children might also bear the names of other supportive Republicans, such as Marjorie, in recognition of Greene’s efforts. He humorously remarked on the logistical challenge of naming multiple children after his political benefactors, joking about combining names to avoid having an excessively large family.

Matt Gerard, Santos’s husband, whom he met on the gay dating app Grindr in 2021, worked tirelessly for his spouse’s release. Gerard phoned House Speaker Mike Johnson, former GOP Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Greene and more in his frantic quest to free his husband. Greene’s staff were in regular contact with Santos and Gerard, NYMag reports, and the couple was quick to thank the Republican for her help.

‘Call Marjorie now,’ Gerard reportedly told Santos immediately after the 37-year-old was released. Greene was the first person Santos called after his release. The second call was to Trump. ‘George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison,’ Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post last week announcing Santos’s release.

‘George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!,’ the president continued. Santos also told NY Mag that he plans to try and sell a personal memoir and that he aspires to someday appear on the TV show ‘Dancing with the Stars.’

‘Sean Spicer had a good time, and Anna Delvey did it in an ankle monitor. Why can’t I do it?’ Santos said. ‘The largest lesson I’ve learned in my life is to always keep it above board. Don’t play loose and fast, and keep it 100 percent honest,’ Santos reflected. ‘Prison is not somewhere anybody wants to go.’
