Why George Santos promises to name his kids Donald and Marjorie

Ex-Republican Congressman George Santos claims he will name his potential future child 'Donald' after President Donald Trump commuted the fraudster's sentence. Santos, 37, was sentenced to seven years in jail for fraud earlier this year, an infraction that led to his expulsion from Congress in late 2023, just months after he was sworn in in January of that same year. The remarkable gift from Trump comes roughly three months after Santos - a serial fabulist and onetime drag queen - reported to a federal prison in July to begin serving a seven-year sentence.

In a surprising twist of fate, former Republican Congressman George Santos has announced his intention to honor President Donald Trump by naming a future child after him. This comes after Trump commuted Santos’s sentence for fraud, a decision made only three months after Santos began serving his seven-year term in federal prison. Santos, who was expelled from Congress in late 2023, had initially faced charges related to the misuse of campaign funds for personal expenses, including Botox and designer items.

Santos served just 84 days of his seven-year sentence. The former lawmaker was found guilty of illegally spending campaign money on personal luxuries like Botox and designer items. To celebrate Trump's mercy and the lobbying efforts of his close congressional allies who worked to earn Santos's commutation, like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene , the former lawmaker has shared he wants to honor them by naming his potential children after those who championed his release.

The clemency granted by Trump is seen as a significant turn of events for Santos, whose brief political career was marked by controversy, including allegations of fabricating his personal history and even participating in drag performances. Following the commutation, Santos expressed his gratitude by stating that he would name his first child ‘Donald’ in honor of the former president. He also acknowledged the efforts of his congressional allies, like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who played a pivotal role in securing his release.

Santos claimed in a wide-ranging interview with New York Magazine that if he has children, the first would be named 'Donald' after the president and his second would be 'Marjorie' after MTG. Other Republicans who vouched for him would also get child namesakes with the last name Santos, too, the newly freed ex-lawmaker stated. 'So I’m going to have to probably do like Neil Tim or something like that and double up names because I don’t want to have 12, 15 kids,' he joked with the outlet.

In a candid interview with New York Magazine, Santos elaborated on his plans, noting that any future children might also bear the names of other supportive Republicans, such as Marjorie, in recognition of Greene’s efforts. He humorously remarked on the logistical challenge of naming multiple children after his political benefactors, joking about combining names to avoid having an excessively large family.

Santos also described the tough treatment he faced while behind bars. Roughly a month into his sentence, the fabulist was placed into protective custody. This limited Santos to just one 15-minute phone call every 30 days and restricted him from accessing his emails. This dark period led Santos to consider [self-murder], all while he was denied medication he used to treat ADHD. Instead, he was provided antidepressants.

Matt Gerard, Santos's husband, whom he met on the gay dating app Grindr in 2021, worked tirelessly for his spouse's release. Gerard phoned House Speaker Mike Johnson, former GOP Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Greene and more in his frantic quest to free his husband. Greene's staff were in regular contact with Santos and Gerard, NYMag reports, and the couple was quick to thank the Republican for her help.

'Call Marjorie now,' Gerard reportedly told Santos immediately after the 37-year-old was released. Greene was the first person Santos called after his release. The second call was to Trump. 'George Santos was somewhat of a 'rogue,' but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren't forced to serve seven years in prison,' Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post last week announcing Santos's release.

'George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!,' the president continued. Santos also told NY Mag that he plans to try and sell a personal memoir and that he aspires to someday appear on the TV show 'Dancing with the Stars.'

'Sean Spicer had a good time, and Anna Delvey did it in an ankle monitor. Why can’t I do it?' Santos said. 'The largest lesson I’ve learned in my life is to always keep it above board. Don’t play loose and fast, and keep it 100 percent honest,' Santos reflected. 'Prison is not somewhere anybody wants to go.'
