In a dramatic turn of events following last night’s by-election, Labour is facing criticism for what Kemi Badenoch described as being undermined by “the monster of harvesting Muslim community bloc votes.” This comes as calls grow for police to investigate allegations of illegal voting activities.

The Conservative leader’s remarks were made amidst escalating tensions over claims of “family voting” in the Gorton and Denton areas, accusations brought to light by independent observers after the surprising Green Party victory.

Prominent political figures have voiced their concerns. Nigel Farage denounced what he termed as “cheating,” while Reform candidate Matt Goodwin criticized what he called “dangerous Muslim sectarianism” following his significant defeat. Their comments follow a report from Democracy Volunteers suggesting potential violations of electoral law.

The practice of “family voting” involves a voter being accompanied into or near polling booths by another person, often a family member, with the intention of influencing their vote.

In response to such practices, tougher regulations were enacted with the introduction of the Ballot Secrecy Act in 2023, explicitly making it an offense to engage in this activity.

Tougher legislation, known as the Ballot Secrecy Act, was introduced in 2023 in a bid to clamp down on the practice. That made clear it was an offence.

In a lengthy statement issued this morning, Mrs Badenoch lashed out at all three parties, including accusing Reform of racism.
