Liverpool’s bid to overturn Curtis Jones’ red card during Saturday’s controversial Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur has been denied.

The 22-year-old will serve a three-match ban after being sent off for a high tackle on Yves Bissouma.

Referee Simon Hooper had initially shown Jones a yellow for the clumsy challenge but upgraded to a red after reviewing it on the pitchside monitor.

A statement from the club read: ‘Curtis Jones is set to serve a three-match Premier League suspension after an appeal to overturn the red card he received at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday was unsuccessful.’

As a result, Jones will miss Liverpool’s domestic fixtures against Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and Nottingham Forest this month.

He will, however, be available for Wednesday night’s Europa League tie against Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise as well as their upcoming encounter with Toulouse on October 26.

Jones’ challenge caused a great deal of debate around the footballing globe. Gary Neville was among those that vehemently disagreed with the call.

‘No, no, no. I know when you’re doing someone, I’ve done it myself, he wasn’t there to do someone,’ he said on the Sky Sports commentary.

‘They’re showing the end motion which looks bad. But that’s not how it’s ended up there, his foot just slipped off the ball.

‘It’s not a red card but he’s going to get one and it’s going to ruin the game probably.’

Meanwhile, former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara remarked: “It’s a shocking challenge. A leg-breaker.”

Liverpool finished the game with nine men after Diogo Jota was sent packing for a second bookable offence.

The 26-year-old will serve a one-game ban and so won’t be available for Liverpool’s trip to the south coast on Sunday. 

In total, the Merseyside club picked up eight cards at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend which led to them being fined £25,000 – the usual punishment for any side that accumulates six or more cards in a single match.

Spurs have not been penalised as they only received five bookings.
