Liverpool have been the best team in the Premier League since their 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Anfield in April.

Losing just once in the league during that run, Liverpool have accumulated 62 points from 27 games, while the Gunners have picked up just 52.

That puts Arsenal fourth in the form table behind champions Manchester City and 2023’s surprise package Aston Villa.

Arsenal took a two-goal lead against Liverpool in April, leaping ahead thanks to early goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, but left Anfield with only a share of the spoils after the hosts’ impressive comeback.

Mohamed Salah reduced the deficit shortly before half time before Roberto Firmino, who had agreed to leave Anfield in the summer, netted an 87th minute equaliser.

The two sides return to Anfield this weekend with Arsenal sitting top of the Premier League and Liverpool a point behind them in second.

Saturday’s clash could have significant implications on the Premier League title race, with Aston Villa close behind in third and reigning champions Manchester City just five points off the summit.

Jurgen Klopp, who has voiced his annoyance with the flat Anfield atmosphere in recent weeks, encouraged Liverpool fans to back the team in a potential title-defining match.

‘I was not overly happy with the atmosphere behind me,’ he said, reflecting on Liverpool’s 0-0 stalemate with Manchester United last weekend.

‘I was like, “What do you want?”. We changed the team a lot and we dominated West Ham. If I had been in the crowd I would have been on my toes.

‘Was everyone down because we didn’t smash Manchester United? On Saturday (against Arsenal), we need Anfield to be on its toes from the first second. Without waiting for me to have an argument with the opposition coach or whatever.

‘We need you. If it’s too much football in December, sorry, if you’re not in the right shape give your ticket to somebody else.’
