ORLANDO, Fla. – Eight residents had to leave their homes after officials condemned a historic building in the Parramore area on Friday.
The announcement was made by Orlando District 5 City Commissioner, Shan Rose, on social media. The building, located at 319 South Parramore Ave., faced condemnation because of a gas line leak and substandard living conditions on the upper level.
Known as the Hawkins Building, this art deco structure was erected in 1947 by Dr. Isaiah Sylvester Hankins. According to The Historic Parramore District website, it was among the earliest Black-owned professional establishments for Black doctors and lawyers. The building also hosted the Orlando Chapter of the NAACP, a dental clinic, a tailor, and a beauty salon.
Rose originally said that 19 people were displaced, but officials with the Christian Service Center said the number was actually eight.
All residents were accepted into shelter with the Orlando Union Rescue Mission, officials said.
Orlando police and the Christian Service Center were onsite meeting with residents.
Bryan Hampton from the Christian Service Center explained, “Our case managers worked to find the most suitable options for the displaced individuals, and O.P.D. assisted with transportation to the shelter.”
