Roberto de Zerbi says a top team and coach would have found a way to beat Burnley after Brighton were frustrated by the visitors and their goalkeeper, James Trafford.

Brighton had only Simon Adingra’s late equaliser to show for their dominance, after a bad combination of squandered chances and Trafford saves left them forced to settle for one point.

De Zerbi said: ‘I don’t think there is anyone more than me who believes in my players but we are a very good team, we are not a top team yet.

‘We deserve to win these three games, then why didn’t we? Maybe it is because we are not a top team yet. Maybe because the coach of Brighton is not a top coach yet.’

After losing eye-catching winger Luca Koleosho to a long-term knee injury, his replacement — and another ‘little gem’, as manager Vincent Kompany described some of his players — Wilson Odobert fired Burnley ahead.

Adingra finally levelled for Brighton with 13 minutes left. In total they had 29 attempts and 71 per cent possession.

But 10 stops from Trafford, including especially crucial ones in the closing stages from Adingra, Jack Hinshelwood and Kaoru Mitoma, were a big reason why Burnley were able to leave with a point.

And Kompany said: ‘In games like today, without someone having an outstanding performance, you never get results.’
