Brighton secured a 4-2 victory against Tottenham on Thursday night, as the Seagulls ran riot during a fiery night at the Amex.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side came out on top in the six-goal thriller after Jack Hinshelwood, Pervis Estupinian and Joao Pedro found the back of the net.

Tottenham tried to stage a late comeback through Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies but it was too little, too late for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Here, Mail Sport’s JAMES SHARPE picks out the five biggest talking points from the clash down in Sussex.

Hinshelwood keeps it in the family

What a moment for 18-year-old Jack Hinshelwood, who opened the scoring with his second senior goal for Brighton. What a moment, too, for the Hinshelwood family – one of the longest footballing dynasties the country has produced.

Full-back Jack is the fourth generation of Hinshelwood to play and score in English league football.

Hinshelwood’s great-grandfather Wally played as an outside right for Fulham, Chelsea, Reading, Bristol City, Millwall and Newport County from 1947 to 1962 while his grandfather Paul, also a full-back, made nearly 300 appearances for Crystal Palace in the 70s and 80s.

Jack’s dad Adam, now manager at Woking, made more than 100 league appearances for Brighton before injuries took their toll.

Even his uncles played. His great uncle Martin played for Palace and went on to manage Brighton while his son Danny, Jack’s uncle, also played for Albion.

MILNER PROVES AGE IS JUST A NUMBER

Among two squads packed with youth and inexperience, the ageless James Milner continues to tread familiar ground.

This was the 35th time Milner has faced Tottenham in a career spanning more than two decades. He’s only faced Arsenal (40), Manchester United (42) and Chelsea (48) more times.

Milner celebrated his 18th win against Spurs, though. He’s only beaten West Ham (20) more often. He almost marked it with a goal, too, only to strike the post.

ANGE’S CHRISTMAS AT HOME

Ange Postecoglou revealed before kick-off that he spent Christmas Day ‘home alone’.

‘My family went off on holiday and forgot about me,’ the Spurs boss told Amazon Prime.

The roles were reversed at the Amex on Thursday night, however. If Tottenham had got anything from this game, it really would have been a burglary.

INJURY STRIKES BOTH SIDES

You do wonder what sacred burial grounds Roberto De Zerbi and Ange Postecoglou have inadvertently trudged across on their travels. Perhaps Ange picked up the wrong book in an Egyptian tomb or De Zerbi refused shelter to disguised enchantress.

This was a meeting of two of the most injury-cursed squads in the Premier League. Both teams had nine first-team players ruled out through injury or suspension.

Postecoglou confirmed in the build-up that Cristian Romero would miss up to five weeks but then the team sheet brought further news that Oliver Skipp was missing the game after picking up a knock.

It meant between them De Zerbi and Postecoglou named seven teenagers on the bench. It can’t be long until the kitman gets a go.

BRIGHTON’S YOUNG STARS

Not that there’s much teenage angst for Brighton. Hinshelwood’s opener was the 19th Premier League goal a Brighton teenager has scored in 2023.

Evan Ferguson has bagged 11, Julio Enciso has scored four with two apiece for Facundo Buonanotte and Hinshelwood.

That’s more than every other team to have played in the competition this year combined (16).
