Harry and Meghan named their daughter Lilbet – Prince Philip’s pet name for the Queen that only he still called her before his death – in the week the Duke of Edinburgh would have turned 100
- Harry and Meghan looked to the Queen’s nickname to inspire name of baby girl
- Queen Elizabeth has been known as Lilibet to family since she was a young child
- Sweet nickname was used most recently by Queen’s late husband Prince Philip
The little girl was born just days before what would have been Prince Philip’s 100th birthday.
So Harry and Meghan’s decision to name their daughter after the Duke of Edinburgh’s favoured pet name for the Queen was poignantly fitting.
The Queen is known as ‘Lilibet’ by close members of the Royal Family, although it is believed that her late husband was the last to call her directly by the nickname.
The Duchess of Sussex has given birth to a daughter named Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, after the family nickname for the Queen and the duke’s mother Princess Diana
The Sussexes chose Lilibet – the name used by Prince Philip for the Queen – for the name of their daughter who was born just days before the Duke of Edinburgh would have turned 100
Writing to the Queen Mother after his wedding day, Philip said: ‘Lilibet is the only ‘thing’ in the world which is absolutely real to me.’
The nickname originated when she was a child and struggled to pronounce Elizabeth, and was used by her father King George VI, who in adoring correspondence described ‘Lilibet’ as ‘my pride’.
The Sussexes also announced that their daughter, who will be known as Lili, has the middle name Diana, to honour her ‘beloved late grandmother’.
Lili will not be the first member of the Royal Family whose name commemorates Diana, who would have celebrated her 60th birthday on July 1.
The new baby will be entitled to be a princess and Archie a prince – both with HRH styles – after the death of the Queen and when Charles becomes king. This is because they will have moved up the line of succession
Her cousin, Princess Charlotte, has Diana as one of her middle names and Elizabeth as another in tribute to the Queen.
Like her two-year-old brother Archie, Lili will use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.
However, under rules set down more than 100 years ago, both Lili and Archie are not initially entitled to be a prince and princess or to be styled HRH.
They will only become princess and prince once Prince Charles takes the throne.
