King Felipe of Spain has revealed he has a personal fortune of 2.6million euros in his first ever declaration of wealth.

The monarch, 54, who ascended the throne following the abdication of his father Juan Carlos in 2014, has some 2.3million in current and savings accounts, while the remaining 300,000 euros is in art, antiques and jewellery, according to the statement from the royal household.

The fortune is modest in comparison to the Queen‘s, which was estimated at £365million by The Sunday Times Rich List.

The move is part of Felipe’s plan to restore public trust in the royal family following scandals that have engulfed his father and tarnished the reputation of the royal family.

Juan Carlos, 84, has been living in Abu Dhabi since summer 2020 after becoming the target of several probes in Spain and abroad over alleged tax avoidance and questionable dealings in the Middle East.

Cases against him in Spain and Switzerland were dropped over a lack of evidence and because of the immunity he enjoyed when he was king.

Since becoming king, Felipe has set about ‘modernising the crown to make it worthy of the respect and trust of citizens under the principles of setting an example, transparency, rectitude and integrity in its behaviour’, the statement said.

His wealth mainly comes from an annual allowance paid to him as heir-to-the-throne and as king.

In 2020 Felipe renounced any future personal inheritance he might receive from his father. He does not hold any assets abroad.

‘His Majesty the King, guided by this spirit of service and civic commitment added today to his constitutional responsibilities his personal decision to make public his assets,’ the statement continued.

It comes as the Spanish government said it would pass a decree to ‘strengthen the transparency, accountability, efficiency’ of the royal family ‘in line with the principles that have presided’ during Felipe’s reign.
