When searching for that perfect party ensemble, sequins are a perennial favorite. And for a festive Christmas affair? Red is the ultimate choice.

I always find wardrobe inspiration in the Princess of Wales, particularly when she graces events in her stunning Needle & Thread dress.

Kate first captivated audiences with this breathtaking outfit during a Buckingham Palace reception in January 2020, and then wore it again for the 2022 Together At Christmas carol service trailer.

On both occasions, she looked impeccable, completing her look with Soru Jewellery’s ruby and diamond earrings, her iconic Gianvito Rossi red suede heels, and a matching Jenny Packham clutch.

With the holiday season looming, I felt compelled to try this exquisite dress for myself.

Unsurprisingly, it’s become one of the brand’s bestsellers, selling out within a day of Kate’s first appearance and amassing a waiting list of 700 eager buyers. Stock is now frequently replenished to meet demand.

I ordered Kate’s exact style – the Aurora ballerina – in a UK size 10, though it also comes in a full-length ballgown version.

Loved by the Princess of Wales 

Unwrapping the delivery, the first thing I noticed was the weight of the dress – a testament to the quality of the materials. 

The design features a delicate tulle base, embellished with tonal red sequins and finished with a softly frilled neckline. 

I loved the partially lined bodice, which includes a semi-sheer panel for a subtle hint of décolletage, while the lace-effect sleeves quickly became a favourite detail. 

The A-line skirt is effortlessly flattering on, skimming the figure beautifully. Crafted from layers of tulle that fall to the ankle (for reference, I’m just under 5’8″ and wearing three-inch heels), it’s a silhouette that will compliment all body types. 

Despite its intricate detailing, the dress was surprisingly easy to step into, and the concealed back zip fastened without any fuss. 

There’s no denying it – the moment I slipped it on, I felt instantly glamorous and party-ready.

One thing worth noting: due to the heavy embellishment and structured fabric, the dress has a snug fit through the bodice – so you may wish to size up, as I did, for a more comfortable fit. 

The Needle & Thread website describes this dress as cherry red, which I would say is accurate. The light-catching sequins can appear slightly more orange-red in some photos, or show a pink undertone in others. 

As with any embellished design, a little shedding did occur, but it’s unlikely to affect the garment’s overall look – it’s heavily adorned from top to hem!

While Kate opted for a full-on red accessory look, I let the dress take centre stage by pairing it with a simple pair of black Aldo heels (similar available here). It would also look gorgeous with a red hair bow, like this one from Boden.
