Hansa striker Junior Brumado was shown a red four minutes before the break after a VAR review for the use of an elbow just before the interruption.
The breakthrough came through Blendi Idrizi’s close-range finish to give Schalke the lead in the 72nd minute.
Kenan Karaman sealed the win for the visitors with a neat finish from the left four minutes from time.
The win has seen Schalke climb out of the relegation zone and into 13th, while Hansa drop into the danger zone.
