Calvin Ramsay will go ‘from strength to strength at Liverpool’ insists Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin… who believes Jurgen Klopp’s side ‘are very lucky’ to be getting the Scottish Young Player of the Year

  • Liverpool have agreed a fee with Aberdeen to sign teenager Calvin Ramsay
  • Ramsay still has to complete and put last touches to personal terms on his deal
  • Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin has backed Ramsay to thrive for Liverpool

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin has backed Calvin Ramsay to thrive in the top-level environment at Liverpool.

The Champions League finalists have agreed to pay £4.5million — plus another £3.5m in potential add-ons — to recruit the 18-year-old right-back into Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Ramsay still has to complete a medical and put the last touches to personal terms on a five-year deal at Anfield. But if those details are completed without any hitches, Goodwin believes Liverpool will be in the fortunate position of landing a player with immense potential.

‘The two clubs have agreed a fee but there are a few things that need to go on behind the scenes,’ said Goodwin.

‘Calvin needs to pass a medical and agree to personal terms. It is a very exciting opportunity for him and his family.

‘The academy here at Aberdeen deserves a huge amount of credit for developing Calvin. ‘Liverpool are very lucky if the deal does go through because they are getting a very exciting talent who won the Young Player of the Year award.

‘We had high hopes for him and there is no doubt he will go from strength to strength at Liverpool.’ Klopp views Ramsay as an understudy to England star Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Goodwin agreeing he is tailor-made for Liverpool’s tactical system.

‘They have another Scottish player there in Andy Robertson going up the left flank,’ continued the Dons boss, whose side will open the new Premiership season with a trip to Celtic Park on July 31.

‘With Trent Alexander-Arnold on the other side, they have two very offensive full-backs. That is what Calvin will bring as well. His stats in the first half of the season were right up there with the top full-backs in the world.’
