Mason Mount has missed out on about £10million in lost earnings as a result of his decision to play hard-ball with Chelsea over a new contract.

The England midfielder remains in deadlock with the club over the terms of a new contract and could be sold when he enters the final 12 months of his deal at the end of the season, with Manchester United the latest club to join Liverpool and Newcastle in monitoring the situation closely.

Chelsea’s latest offer of about £170,000 a week is very similar the £100,000 weekly pay-rise Mount was offered by the Roman Abramovich regime two years ago.

Had Mount signed that deal he would have been in a position to negotiate a renewal on increased terms this summer.

Wherever he ends up, the 24-year-old is unlikely to recoup the earnings he has missed out on over the last two years.

PFA AWARDS VOTE LENGTHENED

Voting for the PFA Player of the Year award will be based on performances over the whole campaign for the first time this season, with the players’ union opting to keep the polls open until the end of July.

The PFA have been widely criticised in the past for stopping voting at the start of April before the season has reached its climax, but the ballot will stay open for much of the summer this year as the awards ceremony has been pushed back to August 29.

Mo Salah and Sam Kerr won the main awards last season, and the later date will allow the Chelsea striker to attend after playing in the Women’s World Cup for Australia.

LIVERPOOL PAIR PILE INTO PADEL

Jordan Henderson and James Milner are investing in a leisure club in Cheshire devoted to padel, the fast-growing racket sport best described as a hybrid of tennis and squash.

The Liverpool midfielders were introduced to padel by Jurgen Klopp on a training camp in Tenerife, with the manager so taken by the sport that he insisted upon a court being installed at the club’s training ground.

Padel matches are now a regular occurrence among Liverpool’s squad, which has led Henderson and Milner to invest in the Padel Club in Handforth, along with former Everton players Joleon Lescott and Gareth Barry.

LEAGUE LOGS OUT OF TONEY ROW

The Premier League are doing their utmost to stay out of the Ivan Toney betting controversy, which has left the Brentford striker facing a lengthy ban after admitting breaching FA rules.

Despite his impending absence from their competition, the wi-fi password for guests at the Premier League’s headquarters in London is IvanToney17, an irony which has been noted by visitors from other clubs.

SWEDES CONFIDENT OF EFL GRAB

Swedish broadcaster Viaplay have begun approaching top football pundits in a sign of increasing confidence that they will win some of the live rights to show EFL matches from the 2024-25 season.

The EFL offered more than 20 packages to broadcasters last month as they seek to put pressure on existing rights holders Sky Sports, in the hope of doubling the value of the contract to over £200million a year.

Viaplay are understood to have told several pundits they expect to add significantly to their football content, which is currently limited to the Scottish Cup and La Liga in the UK, as well as the Premier League in Scandinavia and Poland.

Sky Sports, BT Sport and DAZN are also planning to bid for the EFL rights, which could see every match in all three divisions broadcast live for the first time.

PELE TRIBUTE AT BRAZIL CLASH

The FA are planning a tribute to Pele when England’s Lionesses play Brazil at Wembley next month in the Finalissima, the match between the European and South American champions.

The game, on April 6, sold out within days of tickets being released in January and will be preceded by a minute’s applause and various video montages celebrating the life of Pele, the Brazil legend who died aged 82 in December.
