Cristiano Ronaldo has been ranked as the most wasteful finisher at Euro 2024 based on xG, after again failing to find the back of the net for Portugal.

The legendary forward saw his penalty saved in extra-time of Portugal’s last-16 clash with Slovenia, as he went a fourth game at the tournament without finding the back of the net.

Ronaldo was left in tears after his miss, though he managed to get some form of redemption, when he converted his spot-kick during their penalty shootout victory.

Sofascore have revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo is the biggest xG underperformer at the tournament with -2.75.

The top five also features a pair of French stars and a duo who are contracted to Premier League clubs.

Antoine Griezmann ranks second in the list at -1.92, while his superstar team-mate Kylian Mbappe is in fifth with -1.54.

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku – who had three goals disallowed in his opening two games at the tournament – ultimately failed to score and has an xG of -1.70.

Arsenal’s Kai Havertz has two goals at the tournament, yet still ranks fourth in the list with -1.60.

Spain and Barcelona’s 16-year-old teenager Lamine Yamal, has been a star for Spain at this tournament and provided two assists, but he has failed to score and is among the top 10 biggest underperformers in terms of goals with an xG of -1.48.

The rest of the top 10 is made up of Serbia’s Aleksandar Mitrovic (-1.17), Croatia’s Bruno Petkovic (-1.08), Spanish midfielder Pedri (-1.06) and Turkey’s Orkun Kokcu (-0.96).

Ronaldo looked like a man on the mission during Portugal’s last-16 clash with Slovenia, after failing to find the back of the net at the group stage.

He failed to score with a number of free-kicks during the game, and also had a shot saved by Jan Oblak.

At half-time of extra-time, footage showed Ronaldo seeing his mother crying in the stands, which led to him also being in floods of tears as Roberto Martinez gave his players a pep talk during the interval.

Ronaldo was consoled by seven of his team-mates, including penalty shootout hero Diogo Costa, Bernardo Silva and Diogo Jota – who all gave him words of encouragement as the game went into the second-half of extra-time.

And despite him making amends for his penalty miss by scoring in the shootout, Portuguese media have questioned whether he should be dropped from the starting XI ahead of their quarter-final clash with France on Friday.

One Portuguese publication, Publico, gave him a brutal 4/10 rating as they questioned his international future.

Meanwhile, the BBC were labelled a ‘disgrace’ by ex-England captain John Terry, after they used a mocking caption to describe Ronaldo’s penalty miss, which said: ‘Misstiano Penaldo.

Ronaldo, who appeared to apologise to the Portugal fans at the Frankfurt Arena after their shootout win, wrote on Instagram: ‘Inexplicable moments. Let’s give it our all. Thank you.’
