It was over three years since Dortmund last tasted defeat at home in the Champions League and perhaps that’s enough to show how seismic this Barcelona victory was.
For Nuri Sahin, in his first season in charge at the club, this was a first defeat in front of the famous Yellow Wall.
And it came in agonising fashion as his side chased the game but were undone by a superb Barcelona counter in the 85th minute, finished wonderfully by Ferran Torres who came off the bench and scored twice on the night.
Top of LaLiga and now second in the Champions League standings, with more goals than any other side in the competition.
Across the league and Europe, they’ve scored a quite remarkable 71 goals in 23 games. Flick has cultivated a fearless culture in a youthful side filled with joy and who are doubtless early contenders to go all the way but their inexperience allowed Dortmund to equalise twice on the night through Serhou Guirassy.
Ferran Torres helped his side deliver Borussia Dortmund their first home defeat this season
Raphinha had opened the scoring for Barcelona in Dortmund in the second-half on Wednesday
After Raphinha gave the visitors the lead with his 17th goal of the season, 17-year-old Pau Cubarsi carelessly fouled Guirassy in the box, with the Guinea international making no mistake from the spot on the hour mark.
Flick made a triple change with 20 minutes to go, chucking on Frenkie de Jong, Fermin Lopez and Torres and it was Torres who gave Barca the lead in the 75th minute, converting from close range after Lopez’s effort was parried by Gregor Kobel.
But three minutes later, Barca’s defence was caught sleeping and Pascal Gross timed his run to perfection and set up Guirassy, who passed into an empty net.
With five minutes to go, Player of the Match Lamine Yamal threaded through Torres and the former Manchester City man drilled in a right-footed strike and silenced the sell out crowd.
Dortmund’s Yellow Wall was packed over an hour before kick off but it was Barcelona who were dominant from the outset, with Yamal a constant force and a joy to watch.
‘Yamal was the biggest threat to Dortmund… an all-round great contribution,’ UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel concluded after.
The 17-year-old’s signature trivela pass in the first half was too good for the Dortmund defence but Raphinha, the Barcelona skipper, somehow fired wide with only the keeper to beat.
Kobel then made a fine stop to deny Yamal before Jules Kounde’s snapshot from inside the box was also kept out by the Dortmund keeper.
Serhou Guirassy netted a brace for the hosts but it wasn’t enough to secure the European win
After another spellbinding performance, Lamine Yamal was named Player of the Match
Nuri Sahin has had an impressive start to the season with the Bundesliga team but he admitted he was far from pleased with the result
Sahin’s side had only 30 percent of possession in the first half but they did have chances with Marcel Sabitzer blazing over after Julien Duranville did well and Guirassy firing wide after he was teed up by Jamie Gittens on the brink of half-time.
Surprisingly for two sides who had scored 34 goals in the competition combined going into this clash, it was goalless at the break but the goals inevitably came after with Flick remarkably getting his sixth win out of six against Dortmund.
The German’s dream start to life at Barcelona goes on, with his side now beating both Bayern Munich and Dortmund in Europe. And who can forget the way they demolished Real Madrid in their own backyard.
‘I have to congratulate the team,’ Flick said. ‘The best thing today was the possession in the first half and how the substitutions with Ferran and Fermín did. You can see that the team believes.’
For his counterpart Sahin, ultimately it was an evening of frustration with Nico Schlotterbeck facing a major spell on the sidelines. The centre-half had to be stretchered off after the final whistle, just seconds after he headed over in injury time.
‘It’s boiling inside me because we played well. Everyone tells me we played well. But that doesn’t help us. We have to win these games. I don’t want to hear that we played a good game. That doesn’t comfort me,’ said Sahin.
