A Barnsley supporter has died after being taken ill outside Lincoln City’s LNER Stadium on Tuesday night.

Anton Roberts had watched his side’s 0-0 draw against Lincoln and was leaving the ground before his tragic death. 

Paramedics rushed to the scene to treat him but he could not be revived. No cause of death has been given. 

Barnsley FC said it was ‘deeply saddened’ to learn of Mr Roberts’ death and was in touch with his family to provide support. 

The club plans to make a gesture at its next match against Oxford United with a minute’s applause.

‘Barnsley Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a supporter at Tuesday night’s fixture against Lincoln City,’ the club said in a statement.

‘Anton Roberts received treatment from emergency services outside of the LNER Stadium following the game, but devastatingly, passed away last night.

‘The club has been liaising with and will continue to support the family and friends of Mr Roberts through this exceptionally difficult time, whilst asking for their privacy to be respected.

‘We encourage all supporters to join in the 61st-minute applause at Oakwell on Saturday in our game against Oxford United.

‘Once a Red, Always a Red.’

Lincoln City also paid tribute to Roberts with a statement on their official Twitter account.

‘Everyone at Lincoln City offers their condolences to the friends and family of Anton Roberts. Our thanks to the first responders and emergency services who were quickly on scene for their efforts.’
