Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has confirmed his desire to stay with the club in the face of reignited interest from Manchester City.

Guimaraes has been on the radar of most of the Premier League’s elite ever since he moved to Newcastle in January 2022, with most of the speculation revolving around Arsenal and City.

Reports last month added Guimaraes to City’s list of summer transfer targets ahead of a midfield rebuild sparked by the impending departure of Kevin De Bruyne, although a price tag of £100m threatened to put an end to proceedings early on.

Quizzed on his future by FourFourTwo, Guimaraes did not hide his admiration for City manager Pep Guardiola but reaffirmed his ever-growing love for Newcastle.

“I’m very much at home and living a dream,” he said. “For me to leave, it must be something great for the club, not for me.

“I don’t worry about it. I trust the club and my agents. I’m so happy here and I want to stay.”

Guimaraes has previously spoken with Guardiola but the Brazil international insisted his conversations never involved any transfer pitches.

“I’ve spoken with him, but nothing about a potential move,” Guimaraes confirmed. “He has said some nice things about my game, and I am very humbled by that because he is the best coach I’ve ever seen. I admire how he has impacted football.”

Newcastle are hoping to keep hold of the vast majority of their squad this summer and, alongside their mammoth price tag for Guimaraes, are demanding close to £150m to part ways with striker Alexander Isak – a fee likely to scare away interest from Liverpool.

City, meanwhile, have a lengthy list of midfield targets. Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is the headline target but the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White and Gabriel Sara, of Nottingham Forest and Galatasaray respectively, are also under consideration.
