David Beckham hits out at MLS rival for lack of 'respect' after his Inter Miami team were savagely mocked following 4-1 defeat

David Beckham has hit out at Minnesota United in a series of social media comments following Inter Miami’s crushing defeat at Allianz Field on Saturday.

Beckham, who co-owns the Florida-based MLS side, saw his team crumble in the Upper Midwest of the United States, shipping four to the Loons.

The hosts scored two in each half, either side of Lionel Messi’s 10th goal in all competitions this season, to hand Miami their heaviest defeat since the Argentine legend’s arrival at the club in 2023.

The account posted a picture of celebrations accompanied by the caption ‘Pink Phony Club’, a play on words on Chappell Roan’s smash hit song and a reference to Miami’s home kit.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star did not take kindly to the post, and commented ‘Show a little respect @mnufc be elegant in triumph.’ in response to the jibe.

There was evidently bad blood between the two clubs ahead of this match, with Minnesota fans displaying a banner that criticised the Inter Miami project, which Beckham has been spearheading since 2014.

Since the club made its debut in 2020, Miami have brought in superstars such as Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and of course, Messi, with an aim to become the US’ top team.

And while fans all over the world have taken notice of the project, Minnesota supporters were clear with how they felt about it as their tifo read ‘History over hype, culture over cash’ – a clear jibe at Beckham and the club.

The St Paul-based club decided to post the banner on social media with the caption ’49 years and counting, which once again prompted Beckham to snap back. ‘Respect over everything @mnufc,’ he wrote.

Miami currently sit fourth in the Eastern Conference, with a game in hand over the teams above them, and are set for a busy spell with the revamped Club World Cup approaching next month.

Beckham had already been dealing with a lot ahead of this spat. The sporting icon turned 50 years old earlier this month and threw an elaborate party, which the likes of Gary Neville attended.

A week after the bash, it was announced that both Beckham and Neville are spearheading a new ownership group at League Two side Salford City – with the rest of their former Class of ’92 stars stepping away.

The former United team-mates already held a 60 per cent share at the Greater Manchester club along with Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs, prior to the anouncement.

The club also shared a banner that had been propped up during the match, which was an unequivocal dig at Miami

However, that quartet has now handed over their shares while Beckham and Neville have brought in new partners and investment of between £11-15million as they target Championship football within five years.

Taking to Instagram to share the news, Beckham wrote: ‘Salford played such an important role in my life growing up… it’s where I trained with United alongside my best mates every day, it’s where I bought my first house and where me and Victoria lived.

‘I’m so proud to be part of a new ownership group alongside my mate @gneville2 as we begin the next chapter of Salford’s journey.

‘Football is at the heart of this community and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Ammies’.
