A proud David Beckham has congratulated his son, Romeo, after the teenager came off the bench to make his debut for Inter Miami on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old was handed his first appearance for the MLS side by head coach Phil Neville, who sent him on to help close out a comprehensive 4-0 pre-season friendly win over Peruvian side Universitarios.

Wearing the No 37, Romeo played alongside Harvey Neville, Phil’s son, in front of a 7,000-strong crowd at DRV PNK Stadium.

In was a landmark moment for the Beckham family, with dad David – who co-owns the MLS club – watching on with pride.

Following the victory, Romeo took to Instagram on what will be a night to remember for the teenager.

He wrote: ‘First match in front of our fans. Insane.’

Directly underneath, his dad responded to the post by simply saying: ‘Well done mate.’

And David wasn’t the only father who was left pleased by his son’s performance.

After the game, Inter Miami boss Neville revealed that his son Harvey has also been progressing since he and Romeo made the step up from For Lauderdale but hilariously admitted that he missed his own son’s goal because he was remonstrating with the fourth official.

‘Honestly, I missed the goal, I was talking to the fourth official. Somebody said it was a decent goal,’ the Inter Miami boss said after the match.

‘He’s doing well, he’s working hard,’ Phil said of his son. ‘He’s waiting for green card status to become a US citizen. It’s a long process.

‘But like all the young players he’s going to get opportunities in the pre-season. Do I like coaching him? Sometimes yes, other times no.

‘It’s something we have to get used to, particularly finding the balance between being a dad and being his coach.’
