It is now four years since David Moyes returned to West Ham with a declaration which drew mockery on social media. ‘That’s what I do,’ he told us at his unveiling. ‘I win.’

As it turns out, Moyes does win. He won West Ham their Premier League status when that seemed so unsure under Manuel Pellegrini.

He won them sixth and seventh-placed finishes in the campaigns that followed. He won them three straight seasons in Europe. He won them the Europa Conference League, their first trophy since 1980.

As proven by the torturous tenure of Pellegrini, there is a strong case of being careful what you wish for.

It may have been a marriage of convenience to bring Moyes back in December 2019, but you do not seek a divorce when all is well at home, even if bachelors such as Kieran McKenna and Xabi Alonso are catching the eye elsewhere.

Moyes’ pragmatic style of play may not be the prettiest, but it is effective. They are up to sixth in the Premier League, having secured wins over expansive sides such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Brighton this season while averaging just 24 per cent possession.

Moyes has gone through difficult times, not least when he was sacked by Manchester United, only for his father, David Snr, to then suffer a heart attack the following week.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

But these are good times for Moyes, who gifted his father his Conference League winner’s medal after that triumph over Fiorentina in Prague in June.

He is a good man and a good manager and, right now, West Ham are better off with him than without him.
