Dominic Calvert-Lewin looked to have finally ended his lengthy goal drought at Everton – only for his close-range header against Tottenham to be taken off him.

The striker, just the fourth player to reach 50 Premier League goals for his club, last found the net after scoring the winner against West Ham on October 29.

He has since drawn a blank in his subsequent 17 matches, however, and seen two goals chalked off in that time – including an effort for a supposed foul by Andre Gomes on Emerson Royal in the reverse fixture at Spurs in December. 

But even after belatedly scoring during the first half on Saturday, Calvert-Lewin departed the stadium empty-handed after his goal was awarded to Jack Harrison.

Spurs took the lead after just four minutes, Richarlison guiding home a sumptuous volley after Destiny Udogie’s pull back, before the stubborn hosts rallied back.

A corner from the right wing was whipped into the penalty area and Harrison, tasked with making goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s life difficult, put off the stopper. 

James Tarkowski then centred the ball with his head at the far post and Calvert-Lewin craned a low header toward goal, with Harrison getting the final deft touch.

Yet Richarlison struck again against his former club via an unerring bending effort to put Spurs back in front just minutes before the half-time whistle sounded.

After the restart, Everton pushed on for an equaliser and duly found it deep inside stoppage-time after Jarrad Branthwaite converted at the back post on 94 minutes.

‘There are so many good things and so much character in the team,’ Dyche said.

‘It shows even when we’re stretched, young lads coming off the bench, there are good signs about what we are trying to achieve here amid the adversity and noise.

‘We know they are a good side. We were very good today, worked to cause trouble for them and I thought we did enough to get something from the game.’

The result leaves the Toffees 18th in the top-flight and a point adrift of safety.
