Edgar Davids’ latest foray into management has ended abruptly after he was sacked by lowly Portuguese outfit Olhanense.

Davids was giving his marching orders after failing to win them promotion to the Portuguese second tier.

And following his dismissal, Olhanense chairman Luis Torres was scathing of the Dutchman’s seven-month reign, labelling it a ‘disaster’.

Davids was appointed manager in January but his side finished third and 15 points behind Vitoria de Setubal in their pool – failing to advance to the next stage of qualification to Liga Portugal 2.

Then to make matters worse, they missed out on promotion to the revamped third tier by a point for 2021-22 after winning just two of their six matches in the following pool.

Olhanense, who were in the Portuguese top flight between 2009 and 2014, now have a long road back to the Primeira Liga. And in an open letter to the club’s fans, Torres blasted the appointment and of Davids and distanced himself from any of the blame of his hiring – despite being the chairman.

‘The decision to appoint Edgar Davids was foisted on me by our sporting director,’ he wrote.

‘His arrival was supposed to make the club better off financially, but I saw no evidence of this.

‘From a sporting point of view his appointment was a disaster. I could see it coming, but we didn’t have a lot of options.

‘Let’s be honest – our coach didn’t manage to forge a bond with the players or get the team to learn a precise style of play.

‘Edgar Davids is someone with a rich history as a player, but that has nothing to do with his qualities as a coach.’

Meanwhile, a statement from the Algarve club read: ‘We have reached an agreement with Edgar Davids, and he is leaving his post as our coach.

‘We wish him every personal and sporting success with his next project.’

Davids enjoyed an impressive playing career, scoring 50 goals in 590 appearances during a career that included spells at Ajax, AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Tottenham. He also won 76 caps for Holland.

However, his managerial career hasn’t mirrored the success of his playing one with his doomed spell at Olhanense following a disappointing spell at Barnet.
