The Manchester United legends in charge of Salford City are looking to raid their former club as they want Red Devils under-23 coach Neil Wood as their new manager.

Salford are looking for a new boss after sacking Gary Bowyer at the end of the League Two season, after failing to achieve promotion.

Owners Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt are now looking for a new man to lead their team and the Sun report that another former Manchester United player, Michael Appleton, was an initial target but they have now turned their attention to Wood.

The 39-year-old spent time during his playing career with Manchester United and has been on the coaching staff since 2019, now in the role of lead coach of the under-23 side.

The Class of 92 legends at Salford City now feel Wood is ready to step up to senior management and are keen to bring him to the League Two side to fulfill their ambitions.

Clearly the likes of Neville, Scholes and Butt all have extremely strong links with Manchester United, but with the added current experience of Wood of the Red Devils under-23 side, he could help bring talented youngsters from Old Trafford to Salford.

When Wood returned to Manchester United to take on a coaching role Wood picked out Scholes as a role model from his playing days.

‘I had people I looked up to at the time I was Reserves captain – Paul Scholes and Roy Keane,’ said Wood. ‘How could you not learn from them and want to copy them?’

Salford City finished 10th in League Two this season, seven points off a play-off place.

A club statement read: ‘Salford City Football announces the departure of First Team Manager Gary Bowyer from The Peninsula Stadium.

‘A meeting was held earlier today and the Club has made the decision to terminate Gary Bowyer’s contract along with Assistant Manager Billy Barr.

‘The Club would like to thank Gary and Billy for their hard work over the last season, and we wish them all the best for their future roles within football.’
