Harry Maguire’s retrial over assault and bribery charges in Greece has been postponed and could be cancelled, according to a report.

Maguire was arrested on the Greek island of Mykonos while on holiday with friends and family in August 2020 following an altercation, spending two nights in police custody.

He was taken to court in the days after the incident and found guilty of bodily harm, attempted bribery and violence, but key evidence was withheld from the trial and this conviction was quickly quashed.

The Sun now report that due to a legal strike, Maguire’s case has been postponed and will not take place until March 2025 at the earliest. There is said to a real possibility it may never go ahead as officials fear it could have negative repercussions on Mykonos’ reputation and tourism.

Maguire’s initial 2021 hearing was at first pushed back by two years due to knock-on effects of the coronavirus pandemic and has been subject to various delays. The Manchester United defender has always protested his innocence.

Upon arriving back in England from Greece in 2020, Maguire gave an extensive interview to the BBC about the experience.

“I don’t feel I owe an apology to anybody. An apology is something when you have done something wrong,” Maguire said. “I regret putting the fans and club through this but I did nothing wrong.

“It was horrible, not something I would want to do again. I don’t wish it on anybody. It’s the first time I’ve been inside a prison.

“I have great faith in Greek law that the retrial will give us more time to prepare, gather the evidence and allow witnesses into the court. I’m really confident the truth will be told and come out.”
