Erling Haaland is set to join Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund for an initial £51million

Manchester City-bound striker Erling Haaland is only the sixth most expensive signing when a player moves from the Bundesliga to the Premier League.

While the amount City will give to Borussia Dortmund for the services of one of the hottest commodities in world football is likely to rise, the initial £51million outlay sees Haaland rank behind the likes of Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in terms of the fee paid.

Haaland, who will join City in the summer after the two clubs reached an agreement earlier this week, is expected to take the Premier League by storm.

Here, Sportsmail runs the rule over how other players to have made the switch from Germany to England have fared.

Jadon Sancho – Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United, £73m

United fans were licking their lips at the thought of the highly-rated England international coming to Old Trafford but it has been a difficult first season for Sancho.

He has made only five assists and scored three goals in 38 appearances during a woeful campaign for the Red Devils but has also shown promise, particularly when deployed on the left-hand side. The 22-year-old still has the potential to be a star at United.

Kai Havertz – Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea, £89m

Havertz, one of the most sought-after youngsters in the world when he joined Chelsea in 2020, has already scored a winner in the Champions League final and the Club World Cup, earning him hero status at Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old German could, and should, do more. He has 22 goals and 14 assists in 90 appearances for the Blues but has to make an impact on a more regular basis.

Kevin De Bruyne – Wolfsburg to Manchester City, £52m

Rarely has that kind of money been better spent. The Belgian has grown into one of the best – if not the best – player in the world in his position since swapping the Bundesliga for the Premier League in 2015.

De Bruyne has been an integral part of the success story at City, winning three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and five League Cups during his time at the Etihad so far. The 30-year-old also claimed back-to-back PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards in 2020 and 2021.

Christian Pulisic – Dortmund to Chelsea, £58m

The American arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2018 with huge potential but has often cut a forlorn figure having only been used sporadically by Thomas Tuchel this season.

Pulisic has made 113 appearances for the Blues, scoring 25 goals and registering 19 assists. He has only played a full 90 minutes once since March, fuelling suggestions that he may look to leave the club in the summer transfer window. Pulisic’s Chelsea career feels like it has never got going.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Dortmund to Arsenal, £56m

The Gabonese striker’s signing was hailed as somewhat of a coup for Arsenal in 2018 and he appeared the answer to the Gunners’ forward issues as he scored 31 goals in his first full season in England, sharing the Premier League Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

His influence gradually began to wane and his relationship with Arsenal started to turn sour before he joined Barcelona on a free transfer earlier this year, a sad ending to what had been such a promising story. He still gets the thumbs-up from us, though.

Naby Keita – RB Leipzig to Liverpool, £53m

While Liverpool fans would probably agree that Keita has not quite hit the heights at Anfield that many had hoped, the energetic midfielder has nonetheless played a role in Jurgen Klopp’s trophy-laden spell with the club.

Keita regularly starts big games and has featured in 35 matches for Liverpool this season. The Guinean has racked up more than 100 appearances since making his move to the Premier League four years ago, proving himself as a trustworthy member of Klopp’s squad, but has also struggled with injuries.

There is a view that when he is bad, he is REALLY bad, so not a total success.

Timo Werner – RB Leipzig to Chelsea, £53million

Werner brought with him a reputation not to dissimilar to that of Haaland when he joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020.

He was one of most coveted forwards in Europe – if not the world – following his time in Germany but, like Pulisic, has flattered to deceive, with 23 goals in 89 matches for the Blues. The 26-year-old has scored just 11 times under Tuchel this season and has hugely underwhelmed thus far.

Leroy Sane – Schalke to Manchester City, £31m

The capture of Sane was another masterstroke from City and Pep Guardiola. The German winger was a key part of the City teams that won back-to-back league titles as well as an unprecedented domestic treble in 2019.

Sane, who scored a vital goal in a 2-1 win over Liverpool that kickstarted their overhaul of Klopp’s men in that year’s title race, instilled fear in opposition defences with his direct play and creativity, which yielded 39 goals and 46 assists in 135 matches for the Premier League side.

Sebastian Haller – Eintracht Frankfurt to West Ham, £45m

To say the French frontman struggled at West Ham would be an understatement. Having signed for the Hammers after netting 20 times and providing a further 12 assists during the 2018-19 campaign for Frankfurt, Haller failed to live up to his reputation and could not get to grips with the demands of England’s top flight.

After flopping at West Ham, where he scored 14 goals in 54 appearances, Haller is enjoying a resurgence at Ajax and has attracted the attention of a host of top European clubs, including Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund.
