Jamie Carragher is shocked by the fact Tottenham could sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea and credited Cole Palmer with being one of the best players in the Blues squad.

The 23-year-old, who has been captaining Chelsea whilst Reece James and Ben Chilwell have been out injured, has been linked with a move to Spurs in recent weeks.

Carragher claims the transfer would be a huge loss for Chelsea as he believes Gallagher has been one of the best players in the squad this season, alongside Cole Palmer.

Carragher Tweeted: ‘Gallagher has been Chelsea’s best player this season along with Cole Palmer, this just shows what a mess the new ownership have made at the club. Selling an academy player because it helps with FFP’.

Carragher’s Tweet came shortly after OPTA revealed that the England international was the only player in Europe’s big five leagues this season with 20+ shots, 20+ chances created, 20+ dribbles completed, 20+ touches in the opposition box, 20+ duels won, 20+ tackles and 20+ interceptions.

Since the start of Chelsea’s campaign, Gallagher has been heavily relied upon by manager Mauricio Pochettino and is increasingly seen as a lynchpin figure at the club.

However, in a bid to secure funds for an upcoming January transfer window which could see the high-spending club fork out yet more in pursuit of a tried-and-tested No 9, Gallagher could yet be considered for sale again – but not to Chelsea’s crosstown rivals.

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou is thought to be an admirer of the player and Spurs tabled a bid of £40million for the player days before the summer window shut.

As it stands, Gallagher is contracted with his club until the summer of 2025, but negotiations have been complex and in recent weeks the two parties have failed to come to an agreement over terms.
