Jamie Carragher has been analyzing the reasons behind Liverpool’s recent struggles following their latest defeat on Wednesday night.

The Reds experienced another setback with a disheartening 4-1 loss against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League at Anfield.

This defeat marks Liverpool’s ninth loss in their last 12 matches across all competitions, with four of those losses seeing them fall by a three-goal deficit.

Consequently, some Liverpool supporters have begun to question the Dutch manager’s leadership, despite his previous success in securing the Premier League title for the club last season.

Liverpool legend Carragher has now shared his perspective on the situation involving manager Arne Slot.

“Liverpool is not a club that hastily dismisses its managers,” Carragher commented on CBS Sports. “Liverpool stands apart from most European clubs, where the manager holds significant authority.”

‘Managers get time. Liverpool have never sacked a manager who has won the league in their history. They’ve all left after a few years by going or resigning but I couldn’t believe at the weekend people were talking about the manager’s job.

‘It’s only going to amplify now and I have always been in the camp of you stick with the manager because I’m really angry with the players. 

‘But it does get to a stage with any manager at any club where I always use this word – untenable – when it feels like it can’t go on any longer. I don’t feel like I’m quite there yet personally with the manager but I know a lot of supporters will be.’

Several stars are badly underperforming for the Reds right now, including Mohamed Salah.   

After a stunning campaign in 2024-25 where the forward provided 57 goal contributions in 52 games, he has scored just five goals in 18 appearances this time around.

And Carragher felt Salah’s decline, along with the struggles of two other players in particular, has had a destabilising impact on the team.  

‘What you see now is Liverpool in 2018 under Jurgen Klopp started this journey of being a great team and then Slot comes in,’ he added. ‘And we’re now seven to eight  years later.

Carragher also claimed that Mohamed Salah’s ‘legs have gone’ as he continues to struggle

‘The catalyst at the start of that run was Alisson, van Dijk and Salah. Allison is injured a lot now so he doesn’t play so much, but you watch Virgil van Dijk now, he’s not the same player and Mohamed Salah looks like his legs have gone. 

‘I don’t like criticising them and some of the criticism of them this season as players has been harsh. You always look for the leaders of your team to step up when things are not going well. 

‘I’ve been critical of Mohamed Salah off the pitch. I want him to come out and do an interview tonight and speak to the Liverpool supporters about what the players are going to do, what’s going on in the dressing room – and give the supporters hope that things will improve. 

‘I don’t like criticising them on the pitch because they’re absolute legends for what they’ve done and their legs have just gone, especially with Salah. Virgil van Dijk now can’t help other players, he needs help himself, so it just means he’s a normal centre back and he’s not superhuman right now.’

Carragher went on to point his finger at Liverpool’s others players and felt those who have developed in the shadows need to pull their weight at a time of crisis – before he hinted this may be an ominous sign of the club’s future. 

‘They’ve (Alisson, van Dijk and Salah) been that good for the club that I’m looking at the others to step up,’ he said. ‘Can you only play well when they play well or carry you?  

‘When they’re not there, where are the others? That’s why I get angry when you talk about the manager but it’s inevitable and something could happen. But in terms of the players and the way they’re performing now, that’s not acceptable for Liverpool. 

‘Are some of them good enough for Liverpool if they want to win the biggest trophies? We saw them last season against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, we saw them away at PSG – woeful performances. 

‘They’ve been carried by some of the greatest players the club has ever had. This is maybe a snapshot of the future of Liverpool when Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson move on.’
