Kalvin Phillips will walk into Gareth Southgate’s England team at Euro 2024 if he plays regularly on loan at Newcastle, Mail Sport’s Sami Mokbel has told It’s All Kicking Off.
The midfielder has struggled for game time at Manchester City and could be loaned out this month, with Newcastle and Juventus interested in him.
Phillips, who has started just two games for Pep Guardiola this season and played a mere 318 minutes overall, needs more action to salvage his England place.
Ian Ladyman joked that co-host Chris Sutton could play in midfield for Juventus in Serie A ‘and he’s 62!’

Kalvin Phillips has endured another season of frustration warming the Manchester City bench

Gareth Southgate has long trusted Phillips in his England midfield but his Euro 2024 place will come under threat if he doesn’t play between now and the end of the season

Mail Sport’s Sami Mokbel told the It’s All Kicking Off podcast Phillips should join Newcastle
‘Kalvin Phillips has got to leave Manchester City. He should have left Manchester City at the start of the season when it became abundantly clear last year he was way down the pecking order,’ Mokbel told It’s All Kicking Off.
‘He’s had to suffer the embarrassment this year of kids, basically, playing ahead of him in centre midfield.
‘Newcastle is a potential destination for Phillips. Potentially a loan and we know they need a midfielder after Sandro Tonali is banned for betting and is out for an extended period of time.
‘But Juventus I understand are also in the running for Phillips and would like to take him on a loan deal until the end of the season.
‘But if I’m Phillips, I stay in the Premier League where the England manager can see me every single week, or have the opportunity to see me every single week.

Eddie Howe reportedly wants to get a deal over the line as soon as the transfer window opens

Chris Sutton was ribbed by Ian Ladyman, who suggested he’d still hold his own in Serie A
‘I think if Phillips is starting regularly, he will start ay Euro 2024 alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham and if he stays in the Premier League at the very highest level – and this is no disrespect for Serie A at all – and he can prove himself back in the Premier League, I think he walks into that team.’
Ladyman couldn’t resist a joke at the expense of Sutton, who is actually 50.
‘I agree with you, I think Chris could do a job in Serie A right now and he’s 62!’ he quipped.
