Dominik Szoboszlai brought out the Hungarian hammer for a winning strike worthy of another great Liverpool No8, Steven Gerrard.

Jurgen Klopp turned to Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez midway through the second half at 1-1 and the £60million midfielder needed only five minutes to unleash his magic right boot.

Wataru Endo fed Szoboszlai on the edge of the box and he connected perfectly as the ball hurtled into the top corner.

‘From the first minute in training, he has been impressive. He is a very confident boy and has stepped right into our dressing-room. He had a difficult first touch tonight, stepping on the ball, but showed his quality after that. It was a super goal.’

Klopp made 10 changes from the weekend win against West Ham and then watched his side concede first for the fifth time in eight matches.

Referee Tim Robinson missed a foul on Kostas Tsimikas after three minutes and Kasey McAteer was allowed a free run to fire the Championship leaders ahead.

Liverpool should have equalised before half-time but Harvey Elliott hit the crossbar and ex-Red Conor Coady cleared off the line from Cody Gakpo.

‘It was important not to get frustrated,’ admitted Klopp, who was relieved to see Gakpo level after 48 minutes with his first home goal since March.

Ryan Gravenberch found the Dutch forward who turned sharply and buried his chance into the bottom corner.

Gakpo hit the bar again with a looping header before Klopp brought on two of his big guns after 65 minutes.

Nunez got the biggest cheer but it was Szoboszlai who made the difference before Diogo Jota completed the scoring with a neat flick with his instep from Jarell Quansah’s cutback in the final minute.

Liverpool have now won their last five games scoring three goals or more – the first time that has happened since Kenny Dalglish’s team in the 1980s.

Klopp was purring with the way his team played with more than 20 shots on goal: ‘We created massive chances and it was difficult how we missed some of them.

‘You could smell the confidence Leicester had so were super signs from us. We can look back on a top night.’

An added bonus was the performance of 17-year-old Ben Doak on the right. ‘He is so exciting. I can’t watch him without smiling,’ added Klopp.

Liverpool are unbeaten at Anfield since February and their last defeat anywhere was on April 1 at Manchester City – a run of 19games.

They’ll also hope it’s an omen they knocked Leicester out of the Carabao Cup in 2021/22 and ended up lifting the trophy.

Foxes remain favourites to return to the Premier League at the first attempt.

‘I am proud of my team tonight. We showed we won’t change the way we play no matter where we go,’ said manager Enzo Maresca.
