Jurgen Klopp named a relatively inexperienced squad for Wednesday’s quarter final at Anfield, with the likes of Conor Bradley, Tyler Morton and Billy Koumetio given a run out by the German.
And Jamie Vardy used his experience to his advantage to fire an early double to silence the hosts on Wednesday night. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled one back to give Klopp’s side hope of a comeback.
But the Foxes didn’t want to loosen their grip on the tie, with James Maddison scoring a wonderful strike to restore the visitors’ two-goal lead on the night.
Diogo Jota was introduced from the bench and drew one back, before Takumi Minamino scored in the dying seconds of the match to take this thrilling quarter final tie to a penalty shootout at Anfield.
Back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher saved penalties from Luke Thomas and Ryan Bertrand before Jota thumped Liverpool through to the semi-finals in a memorable night on Merseyside.
