Liverpool fans have claimed the decision to award their side’s late winner at Nottingham Forest was correct as Ibrahima Konate suffered a foul in the build-up.

Jurgen Klopp’s men snatched all three points deep into injury-time thanks to a 99th minute header by Darwin Nunez.

However, controversy struck as play had stopped for a head injury to Ibrahima Konate over a minute earlier, as Callum Hudson-Odoi shaped to cross from a dangerous position. Konate recovered quickly and Tierney ruled that Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher should restart play.

Reds supporters insist Konate was fouled by Ryan Yates before he collided with Kelleher and therefore the goal rightly stood.

One Liverpool fan wrote on X: ‘Really poor analysis of the NFFC LFC game. You totally missed Ryan Yates kicking Konate in the head which was a foul & red card all day long. You also missed the ref whistle to stop play whilst the ball was still in the box & before NFFC gained possession.’

Another mirrored those views, saying: ‘It was a foul on Konate, so Tierney got that wrong too. He was hit with a karate kick to the head and the ref missed it & the liner. So it wasn’t even a drop ball for Forest if we are following the laws of the game but nobody on tv is mentioning this.’

‘Maybe I am wrong, but I thought the ball was returned to Liverpool because of a foul on Konate?’ a third fan wrote.

Tierney’s controversial decision resulted in Forest coach Steven Reid to be shown a red card after heated scenes on the benches, while unused substitute Felipe was booked.

Forest’s owner Evangelos Marinakis was also seen confortning Tierney shortly after the full-time whistle.

Meanwhile, Mark Clattenburg will plead Forest’s case to his one-time employers after the former referee was left stunned by Tierney’s display.
