Luis Diaz has disclosed that he is on the verge of discussions with Liverpool regarding a contract renewal, putting an end to the rumors of a possible departure in the summer.
The Colombian international has had his best season yet with Liverpool, reaching double figures in Premier League goals for the first time since leaving Porto at the beginning of 2022.
Even though Diaz has praised the influence of Liverpool’s new manager Arne Slot, who worked diligently to enhance Diaz’s skills during his initial weeks at the club, there have been persistent rumors linking him to a transfer to Barcelona.
Diaz has never shied away from his affection for Liverpool, but revealed the major steps he has taken to extending his stay for the first time.
“Yes, happy,” Diaz told Telemundo Deportes this week. “From the first day I arrived, I’ve always been happy, calm, enjoying the football played at this great team.
“We’ll be talking about it, we’ll talk about it [about the renewal]. For me, I would stay however many years it takes, it also depends on the club, everything. These are details that are sorted out separately. Very calm, I’m happy and enjoying the Premier League.”
The 28-year-old forward has a contract until 2027. Liverpool have already suffered through the turmoil of uncertain futures for their star players. After months of speculation, the Reds managed to agree deals for Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, although they have had to part ways with Real Madrid-bound Trent Alexander-Arnold – much to the chagrin of Liverpool fans.
Slot’s side could find themselves in the same contract complication with a trio of players next season. Centre-back Ibrahima Konate, backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and experienced defender Andy Robertson are all on deals which are due to expire in 2026.
