Although Sportsmail understands United were interested in the talented teenager amid strong links to Old Trafford they did not fully pursue a move, with Spurs the main rivals for his signature.

But The Sun report United contacted Ebiowei on numerous occasions to discuss a move, with former Rams technical director McClaren calling him numerous times and ten Hag, appointed this summer, sending a text – both of which were ignored.

But the former Arsenal and Rangers academy star is said have been persuaded by Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman’s ‘personal crusade’ to sign him.

The Scot, formerly manager at Selhurst Park, reportedly met him twice, showed him around Palace’s facilities, and turned up at his front door to personally drive him to his medical.

Ebiowei, who has represented both Holland and England at youth level, made 15 appearances for Derby in the Championship last season, scoring one goal and providing two assists and impressing with his pace, agility and fearlessness.

Wayne Rooney resigned as Rams boss on Friday after 18 months in charge, calling for someone with ‘fresh energy’ to take over at the cash-strapped side, who are still in administration and are now in the third-tier after relegation last campaign.
