Manchester United fans have labelled interim boss Ralf Rangnick a ‘snake’ and questioned how he has been confirmed as Austria’s new boss.

The German has signed a two-year deal with the Austrian FA to replace compatriot Franco Foda, who stepped down last month following their failure to qualify for this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

United have confirmed Rangnick will therefore combine his new job with his two-year consultancy role at Old Trafford, which was part of the agreement when he replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 63-year-old will start his consultancy role once he has been replaced by Erik ten Hag as manager in the summer, but United fans have been left puzzled as to why Austria have hired a man who has failed to turn their dismal season around.

‘How does he have a job seriously,’ one United fan wrote on Twitter, while another simply just said ‘snake’ with a broken heart emoji.

Others supporters of the Old Trafford club were left perplexed as to why he looks set to remain in charge of the club’s final three games of the Premier League season.

One wrote: ‘Don’t understand why he is still remain at United? Waste of money and time as I can’t see him potential. Good luck to Austria,’ followed by an emoji of a bin.

United supporters also hit out at the former RB Leipzig boss, accusing him of using the club as a ‘stepping stone’ and labelling his stint as interim boss ‘a waste of time’.

A fan posted: ‘LMAO he used us as a stepping stone but because he hates the players and is ”truthful” he is a good manager.’

Meanwhile, another said: ‘This shows how far we’ve fallen, a consultant who’s got another full time job and will do six days a month.

‘In or out, just shows the last six months have been a waste of time then as well.’

But others were concerned about how Rangnick will balance his roles, with one posting: ‘I honestly can’t see how this is going to work.

‘How can he put 110 per cent effort and commitment into both jobs? Talk about burning the candle at both ends ffs.’

Sportsmail first revealed news of Rangnick’s new role on Thursday evening and confirmed that United will still hand him a consultancy position until 2024 with an emphasis on recruitment that could involve working as few as six days a month.

The German will join up with Austria at the end of May for their Nations League games against Croatia, Denmark and France.

His two-year contract with the national team will be automatically extended by a further two years should they qualify for Euro 2024.

‘I’m really looking forward to playing my part in helping United become a real force again,’ Rangnick said.

‘It is an honour for me to take on the role of [Austria] manager. The prospect of contesting the European Championships in Germany with a young team hungry for success fills me with great anticipation.’

All of Rangnick’s managerial experience came in German club football before joining United last year, although he was the director of football at Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg between 2012 and 2015.
