Manchester United planning summer clearout under new manager Erik ten Hag… with up to 10 PLAYERS expected to leave Old Trafford in the summer following dismal season

  • Erik ten Hag is set to overhaul Manchester United’s underperforming squad
  • Paul Pogba is among the players who will become a free agent in the summer
  • United will listen to offers for defenders Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Eric Bailly
  • Jesse Lingard is also expected to leave after another frustrating campaign

Manchester United are preparing for a summer clearout of players after new manager Erik ten Hag flew in from Amsterdam ready to start work.

Ten Hag is staying in London after arriving by private jet on Wednesday, and he will watch United’s final game of the season at Crystal Palace this weekend from the stands.

The Dutchman is set to meet with the players for the first time when he officially takes over on Monday, but will have no direct input until then out of respect for interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Up to 10 players are expected to leave Old Trafford this summer, as Ten Hag seeks to make a fresh start.

Representatives for England goalkeeper Dean Henderson have re-opened talks with Newcastle, although negotiations have not reached an advanced stage.

Newcastle tried to sign Henderson in January but are unlikely to meet his £40million valuation, preferring a season-long loan. There is interest from others including Bournemouth.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future at United is also in double after a disappointing campaign

The 25-year-old has played three times this season after failing to displace David de Gea as United’s No 1. Henderson is desperate for first-team football to press his claims ahead of the World Cup, and United are willing to let him go after signing Tom Heaton last summer.

The club will also listen to offers for right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, three years after the defender arrived from Palace in a £50m deal.

The 24-year-old has lost his place to Diogo Dalot under Rangnick and the decision indicates that Ten Hag has a similar view.

There will be more departures in the coming months with Paul Pogba heading the list of free agents. United’s £89m record signing will leave Old Trafford for a second time and his lawyer Rafaela Pimenta has been in talks with Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

Manchester City were also interested in Pogba, but he turned down a move to the Etihad due to fears of a potential backlash from United fans.

Edinson Cavani, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Lee Grant will depart as free agents.

So will Jesse Lingard, who could rejoin West Ham after a successful loan spell at the London Stadium last year.

United are ready to offload centre-backs Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, while Harry Maguire’s future could also be in doubt if Ten Hag strengthens in that position by returning to Ajax for Jurrien Timber or Lisandro Martinez.

The new manager was having meetings in London on Thursday to discuss his transfer targets and pre-season plans after arriving with No 2 Mitchell van der Gaag.

Van der Gaag’s visa and government body endorsement from the FA need to be processed before his appointment is confirmed.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant Steve McClaren is also expected to be part of Ten Hag’s backroom team.
