The Glazer family have been warned they will cause further ‘chaos and disruption’ if the deeply unpopular owners of Manchester United refuse to sell the club.

The Mail on Sunday reported that the Glazers were set to take United off the market in a blow to supporters who are desperate to see the back of the Americans.

It is thought neither Sheikh Jassim nor Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who are the only two bidders in the race to buy United, have been informed of any change.

Fans have grown increasingly frustrated over the takeover process, launched in November, and the lack of clarity coming from United and the Glazer family. Many are fearful the Glazers, who have not put a penny of their own money into United since their controversial purchase in 2005, will remain in charge.

In an update to its members, seen by Mail Sport, the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) urged the club to ‘make a clear public statement about the status of the process and the intentions of the owners’.

‘And if they are intending to remain as owners they must be made aware of the negative reaction that news is going to create and the continued chaos and disruption that their ownership will continue to elicit,’ MUST said.

‘Aside from that, there are a whole series of big questions they would need to answer: What is their plan to invest in United? Just what has the last nine months achieved?

‘What costs have been incurred in this process? Are those costs being met by the Glazer family, or by the club itself?

‘All in all, it’s been a process typical of their ownership of the club. Slow, opaque and increasingly looking like having a “worst case scenario” outcome.’

United fans have continued to protest against the Glazers – demanding a ‘full sale only’ – and staged an hour-long sit in after the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last month. Further demonstrations are likely in the coming weeks.

‘Our message is clear though: the club is in clear need of investment, and it is plain that the Glazers cannot or will not provide this,’ MUST added.

‘With good offers on the table, it’s time for the Glazers to go.’
