Mikel Arteta has admitted Arsenal “have to be in the conversation” when it comes to Kylian Mbappe’s future, but conceded that Real Madrid appear to be the likeliest destination for the Paris Saint-Germain superstar.

Mbappe has confirmed to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that he will leave the club this summer when his contract expires, and while he is widely expected to finally join Real Madrid, Arsenal have been touted as a potential landing spot.

It has even been said that Mbappe would be willing to join Arsenal to follow in the footsteps of Thierry Henry, who gave his thoughts on the speculation earlier this week.

During Friday’s press conference, Arteta was asked whether Arsenal had the chance of competing with Madrid and winning the race for Mbappe’s signature.

“When there is a player of that calibre, we always have to be in the conversation,” Arteta smiled. “But, as you say, it looks in a different way, that’s what I’ll say.”

Clubs have been free to speak with Mbappe since January 1 and the French forward is well aware of the offer on the table from Madrid, who are looking to tie Mbappe down to terms similar to those offered back in 2022.

Mbappe has not yet reached an agreement with Madrid or any club and is now evaluating all his options, although he has firmly closed the door to remaining with PSG.

Among his contract demands is the ability to represent France at this summer’s Olympic Games, which run until mid-August and would therefore prevent Mbappe from linking up with his new side for pre-season.

Arsenal are understood to be keen to sign a new forward this summer and 90min understands they are among the suitors of Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee, whose progress is also being tracked by Manchester United.
