But Everton managed to fight that off as the two clubs discussed a deal for Richarlison, who did move to north London for £60m last week.

Newcastle have also shown interest in the winger but are expecting to face considerable resistance from the Merseyside club.

Gordon enjoyed a breakthrough season for Everton last term, making 40 appearances in total, including 34 in the Premier League, scoring four times and setting up three further goals.

A major squad overhaul is in the works at Goodison Park as Frank Lampard looks to prevent his side from being dragged into another relegation battle next season.

However, the Toffees’ dire financial situation will prove to be a huge stumbling block if the reported £500million takeover – led by former Manchester United and Chelsea CEO Peter Kenyon – doesn’t come to fruition.

Former United attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard is wanted at Goodison after West Ham’s offer to bring him back to the London Stadium fell well below expectation and could come in if Gordon leaves.
