Jamie Carragher insists Newcastle United are now safe from Premier League relegation after sealing a victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday night.

Chris Wood’s penalty 18 minutes from time gave the Magpies a 1-0 win at St James’ Park to ensure they pulled 10 points clear of the bottom three of the table, with their main rivals in Everton and Burnley having nine games to play.

Burnley occupy the final place inside the relegation zone on 24 points, but Carragher believes the Clarets and other teams involved in the scrap to stay in the top flight are unlikely to eclipse Eddie Howe’s side current points total.

‘They’re well safe,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports. ‘I look at Watford, Burnley and Everton now and think are they actually going to get 34 points even from now, if Newcastle lost seven games.

‘To stay up you’re probably looking at 34-35 points. I think Newcastle are safe, and they’re playing that well they don’t need to worry about it.’

The former Liverpool star even suggested that Eddie Howe’s side, who went into the game off the back of three consecutive defeats, could now finish the season with a flourish and target a place inside the top 10.

‘Imagine to getting to 10th, it might be too much to ask but the way they’re playing, certainly at home, they look like a mid-table Premier League club,’ he added. ‘In these last six or seven weeks they don’t look like a team that’s fighting relegation.

‘They are a dangerous team, got certain players, Saint-Maximin, Bruno Guimaraes, they’ve got quality, no doubt.

‘Their focus is just on themselves. You could even try things as a manager if you know you’re not going down, looking at situations for next season. Maybe putting playing players in different positions. So you could see something different from Newcastle from now until the end of the season and I think they could only get better when there isn’t that (relegation) pressure.’

Carragher was also full of praise for midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who starred in the Magpies victory that was their first over a top-10 side in the table this season.

The 24-year-old Brazilian was substituted late on to a standing ovation from the home supporters, and Carragher added that he believed Bruno could play a major role in the Magpies midfield over the next few years.

‘He was the best payer by a mile, you could see it in the first 20 minutes,’ Carragher added.

‘It has been difficult to try and get him in the team. The team started playing well, Willock started playing a lot better than he had done earlier in the season. But there’s no doubt he’s a class act.

‘The players that Newcastle bought in January, a lot of them were good, solid Premier League players who are here to keep Newcastle in the Premier League. He wasn’t signed for that. He was signed for the future. The reaction of the crowd in the stadium, that’s the calibre of signing you want. Maybe another three or four like that in the summer to really push Newcastle forward.’
